I attended a wonderful seminar at the Christian Alliance for Orphan’s Conference (CAFO) this past May entitled Cultivating Hearts for the Nations which was presented by Beth Guckenberger. I thought, what a great title! It really sums up what I want Mommy Maleta to be all about. I want children to understand what other children’s lives are like all around the world in order to cultivate hearts of service and compassion.
Last night at Friendship Alliance Church I had the privilege to participate in their Living Waters Family Night. Children filled bags with toothpaste & toothbrushes, combs, crayons & other little goodies that will be delivered to children in Nicaragua for Christmas this December.
At this event I shared some resources for parents to use to cultivate hearts for the nations in their own children. These resources are nothing to be stingy with, so I want to share them with you and hope they’ll in turn be passed around like your mom’s homemade chocolate chip cookies at a potluck dinner!
Resource List For Cultivating Hearts
1. Go to this Compassion International Link. I’m bringing you right to the children & poverty category. Here you’ll find their Explorer Magazine for kids which is a wonderful resource with devotions and articles to show you what kids’ lives are like around the world. I love the Sleeping Spaces article where you can see kids’ bedrooms from around the world.
2. Blog & book Kisses from Katie by Katie Davis who follows the call that God laid on her heart to Love One Person At A Time. Watch this youtube video as an intro and then just go crazy googling and searching for more of her material!
3. Beth Guckenberger, author and Executive Director of Back to Back Ministries is a walking inspiration. Here are some of the many links you can search to unlock some of her great resources.
- Books she has written in the Story Weaver Series
- Ben & Joseph adoption story on youtube – This is the 1st video in the series, search in youtube for more…
- A youtube video from Tales of the Defended Ones in the Story Weaver Series

You’re welcome Jacquie. My eyes have really been opened by my experiences traveling abroad. I pray that Compassion will continually be blessed & equipped in order to impact the lives of many more children around the world.
