When my sister and I were little we used to pour over our family photo albums, not so much because we were intrigued by our relatives’ smiles, but because we loved to make up captions for the pictures. I can’t even remember any of the captions we thought up, I just remember laughing and laughing.
So when Jacquie from Compassion International sent out these photos and suggested having a caption contest, I couldn’t resist. The rules are simple…
Caption Contest Rules
1. Choose 1, 2 or all 3 of the photos and invent a caption to describe what the child might be thinking or imagining. Be as creative as you want!
2. In the comment section write the number of the photo you are using, followed by the caption. So for example if I was inventing a caption for Photo #2, I could leave this in the comment section: Photo #2 “I wonder if anyone has ever thought of making paint that would work like a chalkboard …”
3. I can’t wait to see what you all come up with!
4. Next Sunday, I will post the same pictures with some of the captions you come up with!

Blue Corners
By the way, I learned something interesting today about these blue corners you see in the top right of these pictures. When I first placed the photos in this post I thought I had made a mistake. I actually tried googling, “how can I remove blue boxes in corners of photos in wordpress (this blogging platform).”
Thankfully Jacquie (from Compassion whom I mentioned above), saved me from my desperate googling by responding to my email. She wrote that the boxes are there on purpose and sent me a link to a video that explained why.
Have you ever heard of the story of Ruth and Boaz in the Bible? Well in a nutshell, Ruth was very poor because her husband, brother-in-law and father-in-law, who provided money for their family, had all died. So Ruth went out to the fields that belonged other people to pick up left over wheat so she and her mother-in-law could have food to eat.
That wheat was not accidentally left behind. It was left as part of God’s plan to care for the poor. In the 3rd book of the Bible called Leviticus, God gives his people guidelines about holy living and worship. In chapter 23, verse 22, God says, “When you reap the harvest of your land, don’t reap the corners of your field or gather the gleanings. Leave them for the poor and the foreigners. I am God, your God.” (The Message)
God wanted wheat to be left in the corners of the fields on purpose as a way to feed and care for others in a dignified way! He still wants us to care for the poor! So those blue boxes in the photos above are a reminder that God wants us to care for the practical needs of others. So cool. I will never look at blue boxes the same way again.
P.S. Don’t forget to leave your caption in the comments below!
