I have to admit, I have sampled a lot of food from many different countries around the world, but I have not tried a lot of Indian food. I did eat some delicious Indian chicken curry when I was in England awhile back. I think I had some while on a soccer/football tour in South Africa too. But outside of that, I am really a rookie when it comes to Indian cuisine.
I wanted to find a recipe on the kid friendly side. So I was very excited when I found this banana fritter recipe from India on this kid’s activity calendar. The calendar was featured in Explorer Magazine on the Compassion International website which I discovered this summer. I highly recommend heading over to take a look for yourselves.
I actually prepared this recipe for part of our breakfast one morning so I substituted cinnamon for the cumin because I thought that seemed more appropriate for breakfast. They are a bit like tiny banana pancakes because the batter they are dipped in is similar to pancake batter. Before I list the instructions and ingredients, I’ll share a few ways that kids can help cook these tasty bite sized treats. While you eat them you can go to my first post in the India series so that you can serve up some India country facts right along side your banana fritters.
3 Ways Kids Can Help
1. mix the dry ingredients together
2. add the beaten egg & milk/water to the bowl
3. dip the banana pieces into the sticky batter (warning: messy)
Ingredients
- 4-5 bananas halved, then sliced in fourths
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 4 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 beaten egg
- milk or water
- dash of cinnamon or sprinkle of cumin seeds
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
Instructions
1. Mix the dry ingredients together.
2. Add beaten egg.
3. Add enough milk or water (I used milk) until mixture reaches the consistency of pancake batter.
4. Heat oil on medium in a large pan.
5. Dip the bananas slices in the batter and fry them for about 1 minute on each side until they are golden.

Alyssa really liked these too. They are soft and warm inside, very tasty! Though not done in India, you could probably sprinkle a little powdered sugar on top if you make the version with cinnamon instead of cumin.
