At Mommy Maleta we explore the world one suitcase at a time. Our latest suitcase arrived in Russia two weeks ago. In Post 1 of this series, we saw a map of Russia and learned ten facts about this country. Today we are going to meet Masha in Russia to learn even more. Masha is an absolutely darling 11 year old who is going to tell us about her home country.
Q: Masha, thanks so much for agreeing to do this interview. I’m sure our readers will be fascinated to learn about your home country, Russia. First of all, can you tell me what the capital of Russia is? How many people live in that city? And where can I find Russia on a world map?
A: The capital of Russia is Moscow. 12,197,596 people live in Moscow. Moscow is located in the southwestern part of Russia.
Q: Could you describe Russia’s flag? Tell me a bit about the colors and design and why they were chosen?
A: The Russian flag consists of three stripes: white, blue, and red. According to this entry in Wikipedia, “The flag was first used as an ensign for Russian merchant ships and only became official in 1696. It was not until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 that the tricolor was brought back as the official flag of the new Russian Federation.”
Q: What language is spoken in Russia? Can you tell us the words for “Hello, how are you?” in that language?
A: We speak Russian in our country. In Russian “Hello, how are you?” would be “привет , как дела”.
Q: What are some typical foods eaten in Russia? What is your favorite Russian food or meal?
A: Typical Russian dishes are borscht and cabbage soup, but my favorite dish is pancakes.
